The Festival of Learning with PLANEI went to the festival with an intent to learn more about minecraft and how to use it more with my students.
I also presented quite late in the day on Friday, and stayed in the New Rules of Engagement for the day. On Friday after the last session I headed off to the first student let teachmeet at Shore. Deb Hogg and her son also went from PLANE, as did Jeannette James, who also presented at the student teachmeet to show what her students had been doing with magazines and food photography. I was very keen on seeing Nick Patsiaonos' session. On Saturday, with my own presentation over, I chose to go to sessions related to The Permission to Play strand and I also went down in the games lab to talk to Nick Patsianos and play minecraft and learn more about where I could get resources for my students to be able to play multi-player games. I was blown away by Donelle Batty's session and also by Kate Booth, who had been using simonastick with her class. Interestingly the student led teachmeet presentations were all about giving choice , peer assessment and student centred, authentic learning centre stage. The students wanted a lot more input into designing their own learning and creating and studying their passions in life. Much like us I thought. It was interesting to hear of the stories of students teaching teachers. I loved that and it is what I have taken from the Plane Festival to work with more in my class. I would have loved to attend more sessions but it was just overwhelming! I was so encouraged by Donelle Batty's presentation and the amazing creations they had made collaboratively in minecraft, in particulary the enormous difference it made toward students' wellbeing and interest in learning. Dean Groom's Hoverboard has arrived in the classrooms of Donelle Batty, Michele Jenson and Kate Booth in the form of multi player edu games . I want a hoverboard for me students too :) |
